I supposed that NicoNico Douga is a popular video site in Japan. Just like Youtube, this site offers video uploading and live streaming service. However, this site actually initiated varieties of special genres such as Vocaloids, Utaite (Singing Parody), Odotemite (Dancing Parody), game live streaming etc. Due to it variety of genres available in this site, this Japanese video site actually win the heart from many youngster, even youngster from foreign countries like Taiwan and Korea.

On 26th of September 2015, I was lucky enough to get selected as one of the about 30 volunteer staffs for NicoNico Town Meeting in Hokkaido Station, Sapporo, where is one of the Town Meeting National Tour around Japan. Therefore, by making used of my own experience, I would like to share about the pros and cons as a volunteer staff at event like NicoNico Town Meeting.

The first benefit is you will be able to meet and work with your Favourite NicoNico Artist at close range. For example, there is a Takoyaki Stall ran by Hyakaryouran(百花缭乱) on the event day and it would be a great pleasure as a fan of him to work side-by-side with him. However, the number of volunteer needed in respective booth is limited therefore not everyone will get the position of their desire. But this is not something that you should disappoint about as you still a volunteer staff and you might need to assist the event by interacting with other artists, which I think this is the best thing to be as NicoNico Fan. For me, I am a fan of HoneyWorks!

Being a staff also made us grated with special privileges such as walking into management tent and special guest tent without any problem. And if you are lucky enough you will also be told about the artist real name or able to see how they actually looks like in reality, as many Artist only used Nickname or some covered up their true identity in their NicoNico Channel. You might also have some private short talk or shake hand with your favourite artist at the backstage and this where some volunteer staff almost lost control. You can also get the chance where ordinary participant will never experience such as standing on the performance stage, appear in live streaming in NicoNico and given the closest view on the final staging.

niko_03 niko_04

The best part as being a volunteer staff is, everyone was given with a limited operational staff T-shirt which is not for sale. And this is what I think is the greatest part as a volunteer staff in this meeting.

Yes, enjoying the benefits as a volunteer staff might be fun, but, there are also several drawback as a volunteer staff at event like this. Although most of the time our job is just as supporting staff such as crowd control and not the core operational part of the event, but yet it was a challenging part where you need to work properly for the whole days staring from 09:00 in the morning to 18:30 in the evening. Of course rest hour was available but you should only do the resting on the right time with less visitor on your booth.

Besides, because volunteer staff are actually wearing the same outfit with event staff. This made us appeared no different from the event staff in other people eyes. Therefore, we are expected to act like a real event staff without fooling around. You are even not encourage to look at your phone or snapping whatever interesting occasion in the event with your gadget. Which means, if you are really aiming to be enjoy the entire event, should not become a volunteer staff at the first place But, no worry, volunteer staff still have their own way of enjoying the event anyway.

As the final word, I think this is a fun and relaxing voluntary works as our main work is just to ensure all our visitor have fun in the event. And I would like to give my highest appreciation to all volunteer that willing to assist this event. Currently, the tour is still ongoing until November 8, 2015 at Osaka. And the next station will be at Aichi Prefecture, Nagoya on October 11, 2015. Surprisingly, we are also been told that the date of Nagoya Station is also the 37th Birthday of ドグマ風見. Therefore, if you happened to attend this town sensation do considered to be a volunteer staff and do not forgot to greet ドグマ風見 with a birthday song at Nagoya.

Had you ever thought about that a traditional Japanese hot spring town is coloured up by cosplayers in just within a night. Imagine that shops and stores in the street are playing Anisong (Anime Song) instant of current popular song? Imagine that even when you went to the post office for some postage works, and you will be served by Captains of Seireitei Gotei 13. And if the conference hall, the members who setting around the meeting table is Super Sonico, Magurine Luka from Vocaloid series, Kagura from “Gintama”, the meeting host is the mysterious masked man from “Gundum” Series, and those people are discussion topic about anime and cosplay as a serious matters. Well, you might said “This is too good to be true!” or “could this happened even in Akihabara?”,etc. But today, I would tell you that, this actually happened in the Toyako Manga Anime Festa (TMAF)!

I believe that the name Toyako sound familiar for “Gintama” fans as you will notice Sakada Gintoki is carrying a wooden sword with Toyako Kanji curved on it. Yes! That’s right! Toyako is exactly where the Toyako Wooden Sword came from. Perhaps the author of “Gintama”, Sorachi Hideaki are originated from Hokkaido is the prime reason that Toyako wooden sword happened to appear in the anime series. Of cause, Toyako is not just about a wooden sword, it is also one of the most beautiful places you could found in Hokkaido. However, this famous tourist spot somehow just turn into a heaven yard for Anime fans within a day in June 27 and 28 of 2015.
TMAF is known to be the largest anime festival in Hokkaido. Within just 2 days, the traditional Japanese hot spring street was filled with the colour from 2-D world. The festival used to be a 3000 participants’ event in year 2010 and grown to more than 50000 participants within 6 years and had became one of the regular yearly event in Toyako for now. This is the power from the 2-D world, obviously.

This event had totally changed the image of Toyako either to the outsider or local community. Besides having a big crowd of anime fans visiting Toyako, local shops and stores also allowed visitors to visit their shop with their cosplay equipment on. You can also easily found convenience store are playing anisong for all day and local post office ran during public holiday with staff on “Bleach” cosplay. The whole street happened to stuck between the 2-D and 3-D world.

toyako_2

As Toyako is blessed with magnificence nature environment, it also becomes a photo spot for photography fans. Cosplayers even make use of the given nature environment as their photo background, which make their photograph more realistic and attractive. During this event, other outdoor activities such as “Itasha” (car with anime theme decoration) and music stage are also a big service for both anime fans and tourists who visit the town.

toyako_3 toyako_4 toyako_507

Unfortunately, somehow the weather turns bad in afternoon. As rain starting to pour down, visitors started to gather in the exhibition hall and convention centre. Although raining is seen to be not so convenience for a great event like this, but the heat of the event did not went gone just because of the rain. Indoor activities such as staging, exhibition and public lecture are still available for visitors. Talk about exhibition, the “Celestial Method” exhibition could be one of the attention drawer as the fictional town in this series Lake Kiriya City, is actually based off Lake Toya City. Personally, I believed that is anyone had watched this series before will felt a lot when you have the chance to visit Lake Toya. And finally, something really out of my expectation in this anime festival perhaps is the public lecture conducted by Hokkaido University, which included various topics from anime industry such as cosplay, visiting anime spot and so on. It’s definitely is an eye opener for both anime and non-anime fans.
Maybe you would say that it is too late for me to tell you about such wonderful event. But do not be disappointed, the event had just officially announced that they are going to host this event again on June 25 and 26 in the coming years. So? What are you waiting for? You should just put it in your travel list for year 2016. This place is definitely more Akihabara than Akihabara!

When Flowers is not just for the ladies-Sapporo Flower Carpet 2015

In my first impression, art festivals with flower are always flower float or flower exhibition. But on June 26 2015, I just discovered that flower art can be do it this way after became a volunteer in Sapporo Flawer Carpet 2015.

Since year 2014, after the completion of Akarenga Terrance just right in front of the Hokkaido old government building, this Terrance had became one of the main event spots in Sapporo City. The Sapporo Flower Carpet had started to become an annual event in Akarenga Terrance since year 2014, which made this time, is the 2nd flower carpet.

flower_01flower_02

Just like Kolam (or Rangoli) from India, flower carpet is an artwork created on the floor. What’s make them different is, Kolam from India is created by using coloured rice and flour, but flower carpet in Sapporo is created by using flower petals and coloured sand. Summer is just the right time for flower to bloom in Hokkaido, therefore, this should be the best and most representative material for this art venue. Even though some might said that Sapporo Flower Carpet is just like the flower carpet held in Brussels, France, but all the flowers used in Sapporo Flower Carpet are local product, moreover the organizer also integrated the Hokkaido and Ainu design into the flower carpet design, which made the end product have the unique taste of Hokkaido.

flower_03

This event was participated by around 500 participants, including me. But the organizer also welcomed any walk-by tourists to take part in this event. That’s the reason you can see a lot of tourists are also doing as what we do on the carpet ground. Besides, you can also see many little children around the city are also contributing in creating this grand project. I suppose this is an activity which suit for everyone in this city and best represented Sapporo as one of the member of Creative City Network.

flower_04

At last, after consuming about 80000 flowers, this flower carpet were complete before the targeted time. Let’s have a selfie with our friend from France, Julie and also Fikri from Indonesia. Although this flower carpet are displayed here for the coming next 2 days, but I am sure that no one is going to see the most “fresh” flower carpet as we do. (Come on, we are the one who completed it~~) If you also like to the most “fresh” flower carpet, you might consider join this creating force for the coming Sapporo Flower Carpet next year~~

When Snowball Fight is not longer a game for kids-The Showa-Shinzan International Snowball Fight!

When talk about snowball fight (or Yuki Gassen in Japanese), we used to have an image that it is just a childish game for kids. But after a visit to the 27th Showa-Shinzan International Snowball Fight in Sobetsu, Hokkaido, it gave a totally different image of this “childish game”.

02

This annual event took place in the valley of Showa-Shinzan. Showa-Shinzan (or Showa New Mountain) is a volcanic-dome formed around 1944 after a series of earthquake. As this mountain is an active volcano, you can see smoke keep on popping out from the top of this mountain. I think this is a very obvious road sign to lead you here, even a person like me who used to lost my way can reach here~
Even though snowball fight should be a joyful game, but in this competition, serious rules were set from the method of conduct up to the players’ outfit. This game is a battle between 2 teams which made up of 7 players + 2 reserved players. Each team have 3 minutes and 90 snowball to attack their opponents and remove each other’s flag in each team save zone. Players will be disqualified from the game if they got hit by the snowball casted by the opponents.  If no flag was removes after time-up, the winner will go to the team with the most remaining qualified players.

03

04

05

Snowball fight in Showa-Shinzan is kind of “serious” stuff where each players are equipped with full-time alert and focus as any mistake made will lead them to their disqualification. Team members who stay in the safe zone not only act as the observer on behalf to other teammate in the battlefield, but also need to pass some snowball for attacking purpose. This 3 minutes war is just like a battle of strategy, teamwork and also right timing.

06

As the organizer also set some rules on the snowball used in the competition, teams who not in the battlefield need to prepare their own snowball in the spot before their turn. As the snowball is produced by special equipment provided by the organiser, players can just made their own snowball in a fast and easy way by just putting snow on the equipment and step hardly on it. In just a minute, a bunch of equal-size snowball will just be readied for the battle. As the snowball is made by harden snow piece, it is a serious matter if you get hit by this type of snowball with high-speed and full power. Therefore, players in the battlefield are required to put on appropriate safety gears, or else the hospital and clinic around here will have a busy weekend over here.

07

As this is a two day event with cold weather, the organizer also prepared some food stalls and tent for tired and hungry visitors. As there are also many attraction around here such as the Showa-Shinzan Bear Farm, Volcano Museum and Mount-Uzu cable car, visitor can also enjoy their vacation by looking around others attractive place rather than just staying in the competition site for the entire day.

08

Like usual I would have souvenir in wherever place I visited. This pin should be a nice souvenir for this special occasion. I think for my next visit around this area should be in this summer on June 27th and 28th where Toyako Manga Anime Fiesta will be held. I am looking forward to see how that event will look like~~

Sneak Peak Snow Miku 2015 City Tram Exibition

Ng Yin Cin wrote this on Nov 25

As a Hatsune Miku fan who live in Sapporo City, 16th November of 2014 is one of the most meaningful day in Sapporo. Because it was the exhibition day for Snow Miku 2015 City Tram. Early in the freezing morning, I rode my bicycle together with my laboratory friend from France, Julie, to the exhibition ground, namely the Sapporo City Transportation Department.

The Sapporo City Transportation Department is located at Kita22 Nishi16 Chome of Sapporo City Chuo Area. As we reach the exhibition ground, we realized that we are not alone……

01

01.Exhibition Ground at 9:41a.m.

Julie and I joined the queue right after that. And of cause, the length of the queue is still growing.

02

02.Let’s have a look who behind us~

And we also realized that, some of the visitors are not from Sapporo City. Some are form Tokyo. We saw a big brother with a luggage, talking about how he departed from Narita Airport at 5:00a.m. early in this morning to came here and see Snow Miku 2015 City Tram Exhibition. We even heard that some are from Kagoshima, Okinawa, flew over here just to witness this memorable event. Look’s like Goddess Miku is really love by many hardcore fans.

03

03. Finally, the exhibition ground opened at 10:00a.m. Here is my Goddess!

However the first 30 minutes is for media session.

And finally is our turn to have a close look on the Snow Miku 2015 City Tram! Due to the number of the visitors and limited space in the exhibition ground, and also limited exhibition period (only until 2:00p.m. of the same day), the organizer only allowed around 30 people to go into the exhibition ground with 15 minutes of visiting time. I somehow felt sorry for the people who came far from other parts of Japan……But I am sure they are still very happy, even though the meeting with Goddess is not long as we though, isn’t it?

04

04.Let’s take a memorial picture over here~ Yeah!

One of the organizing staff was surprised to saw us in the exhibition because this is the first time to saw foreigners present in this exhibition. I somehow felt really proud about this because I can be part of the history of my dear Goddess!

05

05.In the exhibition ground, other than the exhibition, there are also some interaction activities among fans. Some also bring their own dolls and figurine for photography purposes. This type of hardcore Miku Fans really worth my respect! And what make me more surprise is actually about the visitors who came to the exhibition ground. Regardless of their age and gender, everyone just rush to the exhibition ground and have lots of fun. Now I know that, Miku fans are not restricted by age, gender and occupation, but it can be anyone in community! This what make my Goddess great!

06

06. At the time we leave the exhibition ground, we still can saw a long queue over there, waiting to witness their beloved Goddess. Just I think that the exhibition hours is definitely too short for something like this, which love by a great amount of people. Ah! What a great scene that we cannot see every day!

07

07.Lastly, let’s take a memorial photo with in front of this master piece of Snow Miku 2015, illustrated by Nardack, a Grand Master level illustrator from Korea. Next time should be the snow statue of Snow Miku 2015 in Sapporo Snow Festival, and not forget about the concert of Hatsune Miku which is going to take place in Sapporo during Sapporo Snow Festival this year. Oh! My Miku Goddess! Please let us meet you again in the concert; please make them draw my ticket in the lucky draw!!

For more picture and detail report about this event, please refer to the official Hatsune Miku Blog site:

Yeah!
